Riddings Martial Arts Centre

What kind of classes do you teach?
Our primary classes are Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and Judo. We also have a submission fighting class which combines skills from jiu jitsu, judo and wrestling but without the use of a gi. We have a kids bjj class and we incorporate basic kickboxing skills so they have a good base in all aspects of training.
Once a week we have a ladies only class, the base for this class is boxing / muay thai but we have introduced the self defence skills from jiu jitsu.

What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ)?
BJJ is a system of self-defense developed by Carlos Gracie Sr. in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in the early-mid 1900s. It was developed from Japanese Jiu Jitsu as taught by Mitsuyo Maeda but Carlos made it better. BJJ uses a sytem of leverage, choke holds, and joint locks for its application. It has been tested and proven over and over again through real-life and No-Holds Barred (NHB) events such as the Ultimate Fighting Championship®.

I am a compete beginner....
This is no problem at all. We have beginner classes in BJJ every Wednesday evening and Saturday lunchtime. Once you have gained the basic skills you are welcome to participate in any of the regular classes.

Do you have to compete?
No, not at all. Everybody trains for different reasons. If you are the competitive type there are many opportunities to do so with the full backing and support of our Instructors.

Can men, women, and children participate?
Yes.

How old do you have to be?
We have programmes for everybody aged 7 years and up.

Do I have to be in shape to participate?
As with any exercise program, you should consult with a doctor before beginning. Many people have started "out of shape" but significantly improved through regular training, having started at their own pace and slowly worked into a full training session.

How often do I have to train?
Train as often as you like but most people don't see any real results unless they train three or more times a week.
